Statistics Canada Inquiry

Building permit data has to be sent to Statistics Canada.  According to their web site:

"The monthly Building Permits Survey of Canadian municipalities collects data on the value of construction intentions for buildings in the non-residential sector and the number of dwellings authorized and value of construction projects in the residential sector. The survey also measures the number of dwelling units demolished. Building permit data are widely used as a leading indicator for the construction industry since the issuance of a building permit is one of the first steps in the construction process."

Apparently this survey has been ongoing since 1910.  There is also a Reporting Guide on how to fill out the survey.  The survey is split into four parts.  More up to date files may be available from the Statistics Canada Building Permits Survey web site.  Also included is a questionnaire that identifies the period that is being reported.

Two reports are sent to Statistics Canada.  One, is called Section A while the second is called Section B, C, D.  The Section A report shows the most important permits only.  It is a simple list of permits, so they do not show up on the Statistics Canada form.  While the data for this section show only on its own report, that report can be printed using the Report Section A button of the Statistics Canada form shown below.

To launch this form, click on Statistics Canada Inquiry in the Reports menu.  The year and month of the current date will be selected.  Clicking on the arrows on either side of the year will increase or decrease the year by one.  Next select the month to be reported.  The large section on the right hand side will automatically update to show the newly chosen month's calculated information for sections B, C and D.  Clicking the Report Section BCD button will output the form's data in report format.
